Sports Betting Glossary PT 1
Since it first started the sports betting industry has created its own terminology, for bettors to use when discussing how to wager on their favorite sports. As a result, fans new to betting online have been drawn away since they do not understand the gambling jargon. Today we look at a few terms to help beginners understand the world of sportsbooks.
Accountant - Term for a bookie or bookmaker who provides the odds.
Accumulator - Synonym for parlay bet essentially is a term describing multiple bets in which you allow your original wager to ride over two or more bets.
Across The Board - This is a horse racing term in which you bet on a horse to finish in first, second or third.
Agent- The person who takes your bet.
Alpo- Slang for the underdog.
Back Door Cover- When a team has no chance of winning but scores points to basically cover the spread.
Backed- This is a team or horse that has a ton of people wager on it.
Bad Meat- A game you lost at the last minute after leading the whole game.
Banker- Team or participant with the highest odds to win.
Beef- Argument with your bookie over the amount wagered.
Book- short for a bookmaker.
Bookie- The person or shop that accepts your bets and sets the lines.
Buck - $100
Chalk- The favorite whether it's a team, or a player or a horse.
Chalkeater- A gambler who only bets on the favorite.
Circled Game- Game with a limit on the bet due to an outside factor such as an injury or the weather.
Cover- When a team wins a game by the allotted point spread they are covering the point spread.
Dime Bet - is a wager of $1000.
Dividend - The payout after a victory.
